Lawmakers seek ‘innovative’ health options as Texas leads nation for most uninsured residents

About 5 million Texans, or 16.4% of the state population, did not have health insurance in 2023—more than twice the national uninsured rate of 7.9%. Advocates are calling on the Texas Legislature to cut certain insurance regulations and expand Medicaid eligibility.
