When Peggy, a Veramendi resident, pulls into the community after a long day, she immediately notices a change in pace.
The traffic and stress of her commute fade as wide roads wind past native landscaping, parks and open green spaces. Wildlife appears along the roadside, neighbors gather outside with children and dogs, and by the time she reaches her driveway, she feels as though she’s been pulled into a warm embrace.
That feeling is what convinced Peggy and her family they had found the right place.
"We looked at other neighborhoods in and around New Braunfels, but the moment we drove into Veramendi, I knew that we found our next community," she said.
What draws residents to Veramendi?
Many families describe choosing Veramendi for its amenities, location and community feel.
"The current parks, open spaces and overall amenities were what initially drew us to Veramendi, along with the future planned amenities and the community's proximity to upcoming commercial developments," residents Hunter and Casey said. "Being able to [ride our] golf cart to shops and restaurants is very appealing to us."
They noted that being just 10 minutes from downtown New Braunfels keeps them connected to the heart of the city.
“We find ourselves downtown nearly every weekend,” Hunter and Casey said.
Residents Teresa and Otis were equally drawn to the neighborhood's location. Tucked away from the noise of the interstate, they found the location offered absolute convenience without sacrificing a quieter pace of life.
Once Teresa toured the model homes and saw how close they would be to destinations like Gruene, Landa Park and downtown New Braunfels, she knew it was the right fit, and Otis was drawn to the connected commercial space.
Connecting with neighbors
For many residents, the heart of the neighborhood is the people. Before moving, Peggy was apprehensive about leaving behind neighbors she had known for more than 20 years.
But those worries quickly disappeared when she met several Veramendi neighbors before officially moving in. She built deep friendships by walking her dog and attending neighborhood events like Food Truck Fridays, Wine Down Wednesdays and holiday gatherings.
Peggy credits her daughter's love for dogs as the ultimate icebreaker. Every passing dog is an opportunity to stop, chat and connect. Those casual sidewalk encounters evolved into shared dinners, local restaurant outings and celebrating the holidays with neighbors.
"In less than one year, we have truly bonded with many neighbors and have come to call them part of our tribe," Peggy said.
Hunter and Casey described a similarly welcoming atmosphere right outside their front door.
"On [our] street, there are always neighbors outside doing yard work, playing with their children or socializing with one another, and everyone is incredibly welcoming and inviting," they said.
Teresa and Otis said this closeness is very beneficial and provides peace of mind.
"Just knowing that if neighbors need help, we can help each other—that gives security," they said.
From pulling in trash cans to helping prepare for unexpected weather, neighbors consistently show up for one another.
What is ‘Hill Country living?’
New Braunfels’ striking local landscape sets the backdrop for these connections. To the residents of Veramendi, "Hill Country living" means an intentional balance where housing and nature coexist.
For Peggy, this means the purposeful preservation of mature trees and green spaces that invite wildlife into the neighborhood.
“Hill Country living sets the perfect backdrop for the most amazing sunrises, sunsets and twinkling stars in the nighttime sky,” Peggy said.
During the early mornings or at dusk, her family enjoys catching glimpses of armadillos, hares, deer and the occasional cattle, while keeping an eye out for zippy hummingbirds and waterfowl.
Hunter and Casey experience this landscape through the area's unique topography. They enjoy daily views of the rolling hills framing morning and evening walks along the trails.
Daily neighborhood routines
Because the landscape is so beautifully integrated, daily routines revolve around being outside. The network of wide sidewalks and active green spaces makes it seamless for residents to stay active. Observing the sheer number of neighbors walking, jogging and biking motivates everyone to get moving.
Peggy’s daughter is a student at nearby Oak Run Middle School, and she loves the proximity that allows her to walk, scooter or bike to school, where many of her friends live nearby.
Whether it's regular visits to the neighborhood parks, gathering at The Ledge for summer pool parties and food trucks, or celebrating traditions like Oktoberfest, the Spring Fling and the Hill Country Holidays, daily life here is defined by moments shared with others.
