The Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Frisco at PGA Parkway Breast Program empowers women and at-risk men in Collin County and surrounding areas to take full charge of their breast health.

From mammography to genetic counseling to its new breast surgery and reconstruction services, the program is designed to provide the kind of comprehensive breast care usually found at major urban hospitals.

Same high-quality care, new convenience

“What we’ve done with this program is not just bring some care to patients, but the same high-quality standard of care that they would be getting at a major cancer center,” said Dr. Kaitlin Bokhari, medical director of breast surgical oncology at BSW – Frisco at PGA Parkway.

Bokhari previously served as a leader with the breast cancer program at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, and she was inspired to become a breast surgeon following her mother’s battle with breast cancer.

“Patients aren’t compromising any component of their care by staying local,” Bokhari said.

The program features a women’s imaging center equipped with advanced technologies capable of detecting hard-to-find masses, while helping limit false positives. It also encompasses genetic counseling for women at high risk due to personal or family history, dense breast tissue or other risk factors.

The newest component of the program is breast surgical oncology. The surgical team works seamlessly with the other disciplines to deliver care tailored to each patient’s needs and desired outcomes.

“Our multidisciplinary team is pretty extensive,” Bokhari said. “It includes our radiologists, our nurse navigators, our genetic counselors, our surgeons, our medical oncologists, our physical therapists and pathologists.”

The collaborative approach enhances communication among the care team, while helping streamline and tailor care to each patient’s preferences.

The right procedure

In January, the BSW – Frisco at PGA Parkway Breast Program launched breast surgical oncology services, consisting of a wide range of procedures performed in some of Collin County’s newest, advanced surgical suites. Breast surgeons on the medical staff use a variety of techniques to remove breast cancer, while always keeping an eye toward the cosmetic outcome the patient desires.

This includes breast conservation, which removes cancer but spares some component of the native breast, as well as advanced mastectomies.

“Techniques include nipple-sparing and skin-sparing mastectomies,” Bokhari said. “We also perform all different types of full breast reconstruction, often with a plastic surgeon at the same time as the surgery to remove the cancerous mass.”

Patients who don’t desire reconstructive surgery or aren’t candidates for reconstruction at the time of their cancer treatment can receive what’s called aesthetic flat closure, giving them a better cosmetic outcome following mastectomy.

Lightening the load close to home

A cancer diagnosis takes a heavy toll on the body and mind. While surgery is one of the cornerstones of breast cancer treatment, the BSW – Frisco at PGA Parkway Breast Program takes a holistic approach in caring for patients with breast cancer.

“We want to incorporate the entirety of the person’s well-being—physical, mental and emotional—throughout their treatment,” Bokhari said. “I think just having this type of care accessible locally will really improve patients’ overall well-being during treatment through survivorship.”
