The ongoing infrastructure projects in Austin, including Oak Hill Parkway reconstruction, William Cannon Drive intersection improvements and the I-35 Capital Express South Project, aim to enhance roadway safety, efficiency and accessibility for vehicles and pedestrians.
Ongoing projects
Oak Hill Parkway
Project: The Texas Department of Transportation is currently reconstructing Hwy. 290 in Oak Hill, transforming the existing four-lane, undivided roadway to a six-lane divided highway with new frontage roads and 14 miles of shared-use paths.
Update: As of July 2026, drivers can now travel on newly opened mainlanes, frontage roads and ramps. Drivers can expect ongoing painting, landscaping, asphalt paving, striping and shared-use path improvements to cause lane closures.

William Cannon Drive at Bluff Springs Road intersection improvements
Project: Intersection improvements will improve safety and address pavement concerns. The intersection will be replaced with concrete, which lasts longer than asphalt. The project also includes Americans with Disabilities Act improvements.
Update: Construction teams began improving the intersection July 1 and expect to continue construction through September. During construction, commuters can expect temporary lane closures, traffic signal interruptions and increased travel times.

I-35 Capital Express South Project
Project: The project will add two high-occupancy-vehicle, or HOV, lanes in each direction along I-35 between SH 71/Ben White Boulevard and SH 45 Southeast. The project will include a southbound I-35 bypass lane for traffic to bypass Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive. Entrance and exit ramps will be reconstructed and relocated, and pedestrian and bicycle paths will be added, according to the project website.
Update: On weekend nights from June 26 to July 25, the northbound lanes were blocked off between Slaughter Lane and SH 71/Ben White Boulevard for construction crews to work on elevated managed lanes. The northbound flyover to SH 71 was also closed.
