Christy Seguin is passionate about a lot of things. In the decades between her first decorated Christmas-tree-shaped cake at age 5 and the birthday cake she sculpted for one of Matthew McConaughey’s kids, she dove in head-first to several different careers.The cake artist who lives in Dripping Springs has worked as a personal trainer, real estate agent and the owner of what she said was the largest female-owned landscaping company in East Tennessee before she made her way back to cake decorating.
When she posted a picture of a large realistic horse cake she made for her niece in 2011, requests started coming in almost immediately, she said. In 2013, she launched Cakes Rock, and four years later she secured her space on South Congress Avenue.
Since opening her Cakes Rock store in 2017, she has been featured on Netflix and The Food Network as well as hired by celebrities. For guitarist Jimmie Vaughan’s 70th birthday this March, she and her team made a life-size cake replica of the white Fender electric guitar named for the musician. She has also decorated hundreds of more simplistic wedding and birthday cakes.
“You’re not buying a cake; you are commissioning a work of art,” Seguin said.
