Customers can now enjoy French-Texan fusion dishes at the new restaurant Le Calamar from Claudia Lee and Richard Hargreave off South First Street.
The spot takes the place of Korean-American-inspired restaurant Underdog, owned by Lee and Hargreave. Underdog closed in March, paving the way for the new concept, as previously reported by Community Impact.
The menu
Chef Casey Wall’s menu offers a “Texan perspective on the modern French bistro,” a news release stated.
The menu includes starters such as chicken wing à la Koffman, steak tartare with pain de mie (made in-house), oysters charentaise with Texas hot links and more. Main courses include grilled trout with brown butter, almond and guajillo, a daily selection of cuts cooked over charcoal and more.
Le Calamar’s beverage program, curated by Hargreave, will offer a full bar experience. The wine menu will highlight French, Mexican and Texan wines that utilize sustainable practices.
The cocktail program focuses on martinis, manhattans, mezcal and French-inspired drinks.
What else?
The restaurant spans 3,000 square feet and includes bar and patio seating, in addition to the dining room. The design is led by local designer Bruce Curtis.
Looking ahead
Le Calamar currently only serves dinner, but will expand to lunch services “in the near future,” according to a news release.
