As the National Weather Service has placed Hays County under an Extreme Cold Warning until noon Feb. 20, Southside Community Center in San Marcos is open, serving as the warming center for Hays County.
The details
The Southside Winter Emergency Shelter, located at 518 S. Guadalupe St., opens when temperatures are below 35 degrees for more than three consecutive hours. The center is open Feb. 19, but to see if they’re opening for the following days, they recommend checking back daily after 1 p.m., according to their Facebook account.
The overnight shelter opens at 7 p.m., closes the next day at 9 a.m. for cleaning, and then reopens at noon if freezing temperatures persist. The shelter serves free evening meals at 4 p.m. and breakfast at 8 a.m.
