Four of the original transportation projects included in the Kyle 2022 Road Bond Program, approved by voters, are under construction or have been completed. The Center Street project will soon become the fifth project to enter the construction phase.
The overview
On June 22, a Notice to Proceed was issued for the Center Street project, allowing the construction phase to begin. Kyle residents may see active construction and utility relocation in the area this July.
The project will widen parts of the road, add curbs and gutters, add lighting and add sidewalks to both sides of the road, including one shared-use path, between Old Stagecoach Road and Veterans Drive.
A new single-lane roundabout will replace an existing five-way stop, according to a city of Kyle news release. The road section connects nearby neighborhoods, Wallace Middle School and Gregg-Clarke Park.
The sidewalks and improvements being added to the road will increase safety for students, families and buses accessing Wallace Middle School, according to the news release. The new roundabout will additionally allow traffic to move more steadily during school drop-off and pickup.
The renovations to Center Street are a part of larger improvements around Old Stagecoach Road. Future work will continue on the road’s north section, where it intersects with Veterans Drive/RM 150 and Jack C. Hays Trail.
“It has taken time to move many of these voter-approved road bond projects through planning, approvals and contracts, but this year everyone is going to start seeing more of these projects reach the construction phase,” said Mike Trimble, director of transportation and public works, in the release.
Looking forward
Residents will first see city crews relocate or adjust utility lines along Center Street before construction on the road begins. As construction gets underway, traffic patterns may change and there will be occasional delays, according to the release.
Homes and properties are expected to remain accessible during the construction phase. On a few occasions, access may temporarily change as crews work.
Potential delays are expected during drop-off and pickup at Wallace Middle School as students return in the fall. City crews may implement temporary detours and alternate routes that affect how drivers and nearby residents reach the school, according to the release.
Pedestrians should follow all posted signs during road construction as walking routes may shift. The city will post updates on major traffic changes, detours and closures online.
