San Marcos nonprofit needs help to build tiny homes for homeless community

A 2024 count of Hays County individuals showed about 210 people were homeless. Of these, 32 were “chronically homeless,” meaning they:

• Have a disability
• Live in a place not intended for human habitation or use as a shelter
• Have been homeless for 12 months or frequently over a period of years
• Otherwise meet the criteria for chronic homelessness under U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development rules

Sheila Morgan said Eden Village is facing some difficulty in finding a suitable property, as it must be zoned for tiny home usage and have existing infrastructure for utility connections.

“We're just at this spot where we need to find land,” she said. “We can't move forward without land.”

What’s next?

If the organization does not secure a property by about June 2026, Morgan said Eden Village may have to revisit the feasibility of the project.
