The new senior facility at 1500 Dacy Lane in Kyle is set to be renamed in honor of local resident Adell Hurst.
Council members voted unanimously at a regular meeting Aug. 4 to direct the city manager to bring back a resolution officially renaming the facility to the Adell Hurst Senior and Community Center. The new 10,650-square-foot facility is anticipated to open this summer, according to the city website.
The history
Hurst’s leadership helped to establish the nonprofit organization Kyle Area Senior Zone, or KASZ. The organization supports senior programming and provides opportunities for engagement, wellness and community involvement.
In 2006, Hurst worked with community members to preserve Kyle’s historic former City Hall building and repurpose it as a senior activity center. The building was later known as the Krug Activity Center and became the home of the KASZ. The main ballroom at the Krug Activity Center was named the Adell Hurst Room in recognition of her legacy, according to agenda documents.
"Adell Hurst's legacy represents the value of community involvement, volunteer service and the belief that a stronger community is built when residents come together to create opportunities for one another," District 2 council member Melisa Medina said.
The framework
Initially, the council proposed renaming the facility the Adell Hurst Senior Activity Center. After council discussion, Kyle Mayor Yvonne Flores-Cale made a motion to name the facility the Adell Hurst Senior and Community Center to communicate to residents that programming for seniors and event space for the wider community will be offered at the facility.
Ellen Ermis, communications and grants director for KASZ, said the time is divided between senior and community events, and they were okay with the word “community” in the name. She said they were looking forward to opening the center soon.
“For all the people we represent, we want to say ‘thank you’ for the new building ... everything is just beautiful, there [are] truly amazing results there, and we are looking forward to opening soon,” Ermis said.
