Voter Registration begins Sept. 16: Hays County election guide

With the upcoming election only a few months away, it’s time to register to vote.

Voter registration begins Sept. 16.

What you need to know

According to the Hays County website, the requirements to vote in the county are that one must be:

• A U.S. citizen
• A resident of Hays County
• 18 years old, but one can register at 17 years and 10 months
• Not a convicted felon. The exception is if a person’s sentence is completed, including any probation or parole.
• Not determined by a final judgment of a court to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.

Voters can check their voter registration status at the Texas Secretary of State website.

Dates to know

• The last day to register to vote in time for the Nov. 4 election is Oct. 6.
• The first day of early voting in person is Oct. 20.
• The last day to apply for a ballot by mail–with the application received in office, not postmarked–is Oct. 23.
• The last day of early voting in person is Oct. 31.
• Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
