Three candidates are on the ballot for the Hays CISD at-large trustee position ahead of the board election: Katy Armstrong, Geoff Seibel and Jay Adcock. Will McManus, the incumbent at-large trustee and board president, is not seeking re-election.
Early voting starts April 22, and election day is May 4.
Candidates were asked to limit their answers to 50 words, and some responses have been edited for length, style and clarity.

Why are you running for this position?
Giving back to my community is important to me. I want to be an advocate for every student and parent that lives in this amazing district. With my Master’s in Education and ability to connect with others, I have the expertise and skillset to be a successful school board trustee.
What are your major areas of concern for the district?
Hays is rapidly growing, and we need to keep up our level of excellence while the state maintains its push for school vouchers. School safety, from bullying to keeping fentanyl away from our kids to making sure our students are protected while at school, are top priorities as well.
If elected, what is your No. 1 priority to address?
School safety is incredibly important, especially bullying and its impact on the mental health of our students. When elected, I will be a driver of positive change through leadership and advocacy.
Why are you running for this position?
We live in a fantastic community that supports our district, but we have to continue to manage our growth so our students receive the best education possible. My myriad of experience and knowledge of this district allows me to be ready to serve our community, our teachers and our students.
What are your major areas of concern?
Educating our students to ensure they are successful beyond graduation; protecting our students, both physically and emotionally; continuing to show our teachers how much we value their work by offering competitive salaries; and being financially responsible with taxpayer money as the district manages our growth.
If elected, what is your No. 1 priority to address?
Without the release of the $4.5 billion promised by our Legislature, we will have to work hard to ensure our students and teachers are minimally impacted. Our students and campuses are all incredible, but we have to continue to work together for us all to reach our potential.
