Photo by JJ VelasquezSometimes, hard work deserves a reward. "Lots of people come in here, and it's their day to splurge," said Dolores Diaz, who owns sell-by-the-slice bakery Sweet Cakes 4 U in Buda. "They just come and get the slice they want."
When Diaz, a first-time business owner, first opened the cake shop Feb. 1, 2013, she was handling both baking and front-of-the-house duties. In the summer, she hired an intern and later a part-time staff member to run the front.
The shop takes whole cake orders on a limited basis. "The demand is there for everything, and I have to turn down a lot of people," she said.
The owner said she plans to hire another baker within the next couple of months to meet the rising demand.
