January: Murpho's Rods and Customs
Vintage muscle cars, hot rods and classic automobiles fill most of the floor space at Murpho's Rods and Customs in Buda, where they receive new life through expert restorations and modifications. Read more
February: Faces in the Dark Tattoo
Owners Tye Harris and Becka Grant opened Faces in the Dark Tattoo in Kyle in 2016. Before Harris settled in Kyle about eight years ago, he said he traveled all over the world and spent a lot of time in New York and Los Angeles. Read more
March: Buda Woodworks
Nestled in a football field-sized facility off FM 2001, Buda Woodworks crafts a variety of architectural fixtures for clients ranging from the city of Buda and Texas State University to Facebook, Google and IBM. Read more
Kris Robinson left her job in the tech industry to open Hill Country Tippi Toes Dance Studio in 2016, which began by teaching to children in on-campus after-school programs. Read more
July: TG Canoes & Kayaks
Duane TeGrotenhuis has been in the boat business for 36 years. For much of that time, TeGrotenhius' business, TG Canoes & Kayaks, was a boat rental store, renting out canoes and Kayaks for use on the San Marcos River. Read more
August: iSwim4Life
The leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 4 is drowning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A growing trend in swim training parents are opting for what is called infant self-rescue, or ISR, and swim coach Sherry Spaar is one of the few certified ISR instructors in the San Marcos area to offer it. September: Kyle Flower Shop
Kristy Clanton has been running Kyle Flower Shop for three years, but she has been in the floral industry for almost two decades. Of note, the flower shop on Bunton Creek Road won the city of Kyle's Excellence in Commerce award for small business of the year. Read more
October: Flying Armadillo Disc Golf Club
What once was just trees and brush in the middle of Hill Country a few miles form Texas State University is now 25 acres of disc golf courses, camping sites, games and more. Michael Lambert, owner and operator or Flying Armadillo Disc Golf Club and a Texas State alum, quit his day job over seven years ago and invested his life savings into turning a fond family memory into reality.
