Around San Antonio, transportation projects are underway or in development, causing traffic delays as roads expand and improve to handle traffic demands. Here are five transportation projects across the northern areas of the metro.
Ongoing
De Zavala Road project
Project: The De Zavala Road project will add a series of improvements, including a large pipe underneath the roadway to capture overflowing water and transport it to the Olmos Basin, as well as raised curbs with sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes and safety buffers between bicyclists and traffic.
Update: The project is currently under construction, including the construction of two 5 1/2-foot sidewalks, two 4-foot bike lanes, two 2-foot buffers, two 11-foot lanes and fresh asphalt.

- Funding sources: federal grant, with the remaining costs covered by the 2022 bond
I-10 and Loop 1604 interchange project
Project: Part of the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange project will consist of eight flyover ramps, roundabouts, a high-occupancy vehicle lane and other interchange improvements, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
Update: TxDOT opened the eighth and final flyover ramp Feb. 5, connecting westbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10. Known as Segment 2, the interchange is 65% done.

Fair Oaks Ranch
Ralph Fair Road Cibolo Creek Bridge
Project: A new bridge is being constructed over Cibolo Creek in Fair Oaks Ranch. The new bridge is designed for a 100-year storm event, ensuring it will not flood over the bridge. The bridge project will also provide for a sidewalk and a shared-use path, along with access to city trails.
Update: The bridge is expected to be fully open, and all impacted roadways around the bridge will be cleaned up by April. On April 2, TxDOT began striping work on the bridge, causing traffic delays while the road lines are painted. TxDOT recently completed a traffic survey on Ralph Fair Road, considering a speed limit reduction to 50 mph from Ammann Road down to the Camp Stanley entrance.

Northeast San Antonio Metrocom
FM 1518
Project: About 5.6 miles of FM 1518 will be reconstructed by widening the existing roadway. Two 11-foot lanes will be constructed in each direction, alongside a raised center median and shared-use paths on each side of the roadway.
Update: Traffic on FM 1518 between I-10 and the Woman Hollering Creek bridge shifted to the east in March. In April, TxDOT began drainage installations at Ray Corbett Drive and other road sections. During construction, two-way traffic along FM 1518 will be maintained. This configuration is expected to be in place until winter 2026.

New Braunfels
W. Zipp Road and Old Zipp Road intersection improvements
Project: Intersection and drainage improvements at West Zipp Road and Old Zip Road will be completed upon project completion.
Update: On Jan. 26, New Braunfels City Council approved a motion to begin the process to find contractors.
