A new bike track for riders of all skill levels is now open in San Antonio at McAllister Park.
In case you missed it
The trail, called “The Grove,” officially opened to the public on March 18 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
It’s located at McAllister Park off of Buckhorn Road, near the pump track.
Marc Whyte, a District 10 city council member, said the new track is great for the community in his district.
“Amenities like these amazing flow trails ensure that we meet the diverse needs of our active community,” he said.
The new track is a part of the City of San Antonio’s 2022-2027 Bond Program and McAllister Park Project, an approximately $2.03M initiative aimed at improving aspects of the park, according to previous reporting from Community Impact.
Nikki Ramos, the assistant parks and recreation director for the city of San Antonio, said the new track continues to demonstrate the city's growing cycling infrastructure.
“I want to say thank you to everyone for making this happen,” she said.
Sorting out details
The Grove features both a beginner’s course and a more advanced section, Ramos said at the ribbon cutting.
It’s approximately two football fields in length and was designed by Action Sports Design, an international consulting firm that helps oversee the construction of skate parks, bike trails and more, according to their website.
Marjesca Brown, the President of Friends of McAllister Park, or FOMP, said she has helped bring several projects to light at the park since the 1970s. FOMP is a volunteer-led organization that helps to preserve and maintain the park, according to their website.
“This is for all riders,” she said at the ceremony. “Especially to bring cycling to our young people and have them progress in the sport for years to come.”
Looking ahead
In the future, council member Marc Whyte said there are more biking projects on the way.
"The flow trails at McAllister Park are just one of six bike projects that are gonna be happening here in San Antonio,” he said.
