The Chamber (Schertz-Cibolo-Selma Area) received an update on the Loop 1604 North expansion from Carlos Arcila, a Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT area engineer overseeing north Bexar County projects, on May 20.
The $1.6 billion project is split into six segments and aims to increase mobility and reduce congestion across 23 miles. The project limits on the Loop 1604 corridor are from SH 16 in Northwest San Antonio to I-35 in Live Oak, according to the May 20 presentation.
What’s new
The first three segments, going from SH 16 to US 281 in the Hollywood Park enclave of San Antonio, are over halfway to completion, according to the presentation.
Segment 4 goes from US 281 to Redland Road, with bridge construction beginning in February at the US 281 interchange. Segment 5 has yet to start, but will go from Redland Road to Judson Road.
The sixth and final segment of the project will be in Northeast San Antonio, with the segment running from Judson Road to I-35 passing through Selma and Live Oak.
Although the segment of the road does not have a source of funding yet, it is estimated to cost $203 million according to the TxDOT website for the project.
Going forward
A "substantial completion" of Segment 1 from SH 16 to I-10 is estimated for this summer, Arcila said. The next segment to finish after that is Segment 3, estimate to be complete in late 2025 or early 2026 dependent on weather and the progress of Blanco Road.
Construction for the sixth segment is anticipated to begin in late 2025. It is estimated to be completed in 2028, according to TxDOT's website.
