A new strategic plan for the Cibolo Economic Development Corporation was approved on July 23.

This plan helps guide the development of retail, commercial and other economic opportunities for the city of Cibolo.

The specifics

Over the last 20 years, the city of Cibolo has grown from a city of a little over 3,000 residents to over 32,000 residents, according to census data.

While growth has been rapid for the city, some areas have potential for commercial and retail spaces that could help bolster the city economy.

Areas of potential growth are included in the future land use map, which will be part of the comprehensive plan update scheduled to be on the Aug. 13 agenda.

According to documents submitted by city staff, the plan includes categories covering:
  • Business retention and expansion
  • Business recruitment and attraction
  • Asset development
  • Economic development toolbox
  • Outreach, communication and marketing
  • Organization and coordination
A representative from RKG Associates told City Council the ability to bring a more diverse commercial marketplace is tied to the ability to bring jobs and additional residents to the community.

Services that could be brought to Cibolo include medical facilities, which will help attract other businesses and people to Cibolo as jobs are created and more people are in the city during the daytime hours.

While the plan offers insight on potential development opportunities in the city, it is not a legally binding document.

What else?

The strategic plan will be utilized alongside the I-10 Corridor Plan and the comprehensive plan.

The next step of the plan is implementation, which will fall on city staff to use the plans to guide future development for the city. The full plan can be viewed here.

“I do feel that there is a great roadmap there for us to embark upon, if we so choose,” Cibolo Mayor Mark Allen said.
