After moving back to Texas from South Dakota with his family, Clarence Cowan—who originally worked as a web designer—was ready for a new project; this time, in sports.

“I’ve been playing [disc golf] for about 24 years since I graduated high school and it's become a family thing [ever] since," Cowan said.

Similar to golf, disc golf requires players to throw flying discs—or frisbees—at a target in a basket or hole. The goal is to make the smallest number of throws possible.

How it started

Clarence Cowan said he and his family made a drive to Austin to a local disc golf store because there were no other stores nearby. Clarence, along with his mom, Linda Cowan, and dad, Tom Cowan, decided the timing was right to open Out of Bounds in March 2017.

The features

Located in Cibolo, Out of Bounds is a fully-stocked pro shop that offers a wide selection of new and used discs from brands like Lone Star Disc, Elevation and Trash Panda, among others. Customers can find other equipment such as apparel, disc bags, carts and more.

Children and adults can play for free on the 18-hole technical course onsite. Clarence said beginners can learn how to throw a disc with the course’s practice target. The course has nine baskets with a 300-foot average hole length.

What else?

Out of Bounds hosts community events every weekend for all skill levels. Clarence said players can enter to win a cash prize at tournaments that are usually $500.
