The gist
Part of the Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT, Loop 1604 North Expansion project, the new flyover ramp is the fourth ramp to open at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange. Drivers can enter the ramp near La Cantera Parkway before the De Zavala Road exit.
According to a news release, this is the fourth flyover ramp to open in the past nine months.
Open I-10 and Loop 1604 interchange flyover ramps:
- Flyover ramp connecting eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10 open December 2024
- Flyover ramp connecting westbound I-10 to westbound Loop 1604 opened in early June 2025
- Flyover ramp connecting westbound Loop 1604 to eastbound I-10 opened in August 2025
All eight flyovers are expected to be open by the end of 2026, according to a news release.
The background
Once complete, the five-level interchange will consist of eight flyover ramps, roundabouts, an HOV lane and other interchange improvements.
Jennifer Serold, public information officer for TxDOT's San Antonio district, said the first level of the interchange will consist of roundabouts at the ground level, providing access to adjacent properties. On the first level, new turn-arounds and sidewalks will be added along I-10. Additionally, the existing VIA Park and Ride facility will be modified to fit underneath the new interchange.
The second level will include the I-10 mainlanes and maintain additional space for any future expansions of I-10 through the interchange. Additional proposed improvements on the second level include new collector-distributor roads along I-10, which will help local traffic flow and provide drivers an opportunity to bypass the roundabouts.
The third level will consist of the Loop 1604 mainlanes, which will be expanded with an additional mainlane and a HOV lane in each direction. Improvements will include an 18.5-foot vertical clearance for large trucks and additional collector-distributor roads on the outside of the mainlanes.
The fourth and fifth levels will include the eight flyover ramps, which will provide higher speed connections between Loop 1604 and I-10, according to the release.
