San Antonio city officials began work in August on Phase 1 of the Sonterra Road Extension Project, which will transform the road into a four-lane roadway that leads to Loop 1604.

The details

The project will add a roundabout at the intersection of East Sonterra Boulevard and Gold Canyon Road, allowing drivers to reach Loop 1604. Upgrades also include a raised center median; roadway lighting in the median; a 6-foot sidewalk; a 12-foot shared-use path; two 11-foot left lanes; two 12-foot right lanes; an extension of the roadway to connect with the Community Bible Church northern driveway; and drainage improvements.

During Phase 1 the northern church driveway will be closed, while Gold Canyon Road will remain open to traffic.

Phases 2-4 will focus on the construction for the Gold Canyon Road extension and the adjacent church driveway. The Sonterra extension and the church northern driveway will be open to traffic, while Gold Canyon Road and the second church driveway will be open with varying numbers of lanes depending on the phase.

All phases of construction are estimated to be completed by summer 2025.
