The Texas Department of Transportation urges motorists to plan for a full weekend closure of a segment of Loop 1604 in North San Antonio as part of ongoing roadway improvements.

But TxDOT officials said motorists can expect some good news tied to the project as work crews prepare to open a pair of newly built main freeway lanes soon.

Current situation

The following portions of roadway will be closed between 9 p.m. May 17 and 5 a.m. May 20:
  • Loop 1604 eastbound and westbound main lanes from La Cantera Parkway to Stone Oak Parkway
  • I-10 eastbound and westbound main lanes through the Loop 1604 interchange
  • Loop 1604 eastbound and westbound frontage roads through the interchange
  • All four cloverleaf ramps at the interchange

TxDOT representatives said this full weekend closure will allow work crews to set steel beams at the Loop 1604/I-10 interchange and get ready for the opening of newly added main lanes.

A portion of Loop 1604 between Stone Oak Parkway and Vance Jackson Road is expected to be opened by the end of May 18, according to TxDOT officials.

As a result, motorists will have access to three total main lanes in each direction in the immediate area.

Construction contractors will also close the Northwest Military Highway intersection and turnarounds at Loop 1604 from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. May 17.

Additional major closures will continue at the I-10/Loop 1604 interchange to permit workers to install steel beams for the construction of new flyover ramps, which will be part of a new interchange.

TxDOT officials said no major closures tied to the overall expansion project will be scheduled during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
