Communities in School of San Antonio is celebrating serving Bexar County and surrounding communities for over four decades in August.

The local impact

The national nonprofit began in San Antonio in 1985, said Jenee Gonzales, chief development and communications officer of the organization.

“When we first started 40 years ago, we were only in one district,” Gonzalez said. “Now we’re in 14 districts and over 140 schools.”

Communities in Schools directly partners with local school districts to provide students and families with mentors that have experience in social work and other associated fields, Gonzales told Community Impact.

“Our role is to ensure that students have support outside the classroom for any needs or complexities that they or their families are dealing with,” Gonzales said.

What’s happening

To celebrate, Communities in School is taking on the Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive for the upcoming school year, according to Gonzales.

“Our big annual initiative this year is our school supply drive,” Gonzales said.

Donations from the general public will be accepted at H-E-B locations across the San Antonio metro area on August 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the drive’s website.
