On Sept. 9, Gov. Greg Abbot’s office announced that the Texas Veterans Commission, or TVC, awarded $7.7 million to 28 organizations in the San Antonio and South-Central Texas region.

Long story short

According to a news release, the funding will provide services to over 6,000 veterans and their families across 40 counties. The grants were presented by TVC Chair and Navy veteran Laura Koerner at Meals on Wheels San Antonio, 2718 Danbury St., San Antonio.
“Texas will always honor the sacrifices of veterans who courageously served our country,” Abbott said in the release. "These Fund for Veterans' Assistance grants will provide the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services to help them thrive in San Antonio and South-Central Texas. Our state will never forget our veterans, their families, and their service to our state and our nation."

Funding for these grants is mostly taken from the Texas Lottery’s games designated for veteran support. Texas residents can also donate to veteran grants during the vehicle registration process or when getting a hunting or fishing license.

The background

Abbott announced in May that $46.3 million in over 200 grants would be given to 175 organizations across Texas. These grants are estimated to provide services for roughly 40,000 veterans, their dependents and surviving spouses.

The grants support a wide range of services from emergency financial assistance to transportation, legal services to family support services and home modification to rental and mortgage assistance.

TVC grant categories:
  • General assistance
  • Housing for Texas Heroes
  • Veteran mental health grants
  • Veteran treatment courts
  • Veteran county service officers
Since 2009 through the current 2025-26 grant cycle, more than $359 million in grant funding has been awarded through more than 1,600 FVA grants.

Quote of note

"I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” Koerner said. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in lives of those who served. The San Antonio area is home to many veterans including myself. It’s great to see our community giving back to those who served."
