The Northside ISD board of trustees voted to approve the design schematic for the new sports medicine magnet school at Katherine Stinson Middle School during its Sept. 24 meeting.

The overview

Presented by an official from Pfluger Architects, the design schematic utilizes the existing space within the campus by renovating multiple classrooms that are currently not in use. The schematic also proposes extending the existing administration area, which is currently a third of the needed size, according to school district documents.

The only area that will be extended past the school’s current footprint is the administration suite, an official from Pfluger Architects said.

The design schematic also plans to expand the alternative learning environment classrooms; create an outdoor dining area; upgrade the fences from 6-foot-high to 8-foot-high non-scaleable fences; create a security vestibule complete with a security door; add new canopies on the exterior and upgrade the lighting at the bus canopy.

Additionally, the official also noted that the new canopies on the exterior provide an opportunity to brand the school and mark the main entryway.

This is a great opportunity to provide a mark that identifies the front entrance, but also celebrates Katherine Stinson’s aviation career, the Pfluger Architect official said.

Some members of the board expressed concerns about the possibility of items being passed through the fence of the outdoor dining area.

Pfluger Architect officials explained that the fencing around the outdoor dining area would also have a perforated panel that screens off the area.

The district expects the construction to be completed by August 2026.
