As part of the 102.5-mile-long Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System, San Antonio City Council voted to authorize a $1.5 million contract with Abelar Incorporated to construct a connector trail to the Salado Creek Greenway System during its April 17 meeting.

The overview

Located northwest of Loop 1604 and Rogers Ranch Parkway in District 9, the project will construct a new 0.60-mile-long, 10-foot-wide concrete trail between Treble Creek and the Salado Creek Greenway. According to city documents, the trailhead will provide several nearby neighborhoods bikeable and walkable access to the larger trail system.

The project includes:
  • Four drainage structures
  • 28 parking spaces at the corner of Treble Creek and Rogers Ranch Parkway
  • A water fountain
  • Signage
  • Light poles
  • Planting trees along the trailhead
Funding for the project will be taken from the fiscal year 2025-2030 Capitol Improvement Program.

The backstory

According to city documents, the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System is a network of multiuse and accessible trails built through natural landscapes along San Antonio waterways and tributaries.

The trails system program includes the acquisition and preservation of the natural landscape as well as the development of multiuse trails, trailheads, signage and associated amenities.

Quote of note

“The trail connection is going to open up the trail to thousands of residents in the Rogers Ranch community, and it really adds to the quality of life in this part of the city,” District 9 council member John Courage said.

Looking ahead

Construction is estimated to begin this summer and be completed in fall 2026.
