As a teenager, owner Martha Nagel dreamed of owning her own record store one day. She also had a job at a record store in the 80s.

The backstory

As she got older, Nagel said going to estate sales with her mom became a fun hobby. Before opening Crescent Moon in 2021, Nagel and her mom would sell their estate sale finds at vendor malls. Since opening her store, she enjoys sharing her passion with her daughter Marissa, who manages the store.

“I really wanted Marissa to experience being able to work in a record store because I had so much fun. It was just the best time of my life,” Nagel said. “My mom and I would go into estate sales and get vintage items and sell them, so I always loved that part too.”

The setup

Crescent Moon features over 60 vendors that offer a variety of collectibles including toys, clothes, antiques, jewelry, and more. Nagel explained that vendors are given creative freedom to curate their section of items.

“Leasing our vendors a space here is important to them because it can be the start of their new business or some just do it as a hobby. Either way, people coming in to shop can find just about anything in here.”

Popular store items include nostalgic 80s and 90s toys like My Little Pony, Pokemon, video games and other pop culture items. The shop also carries goth items, crystals, art, furniture, glassware and comic books.

The record store section is curated by Nagel and her daughter. It offers a wide range of music genres as well as movies, CDs and posters.

What’s special about it?

Nagel said she is proud to see a younger generation of shoppers becoming interested in collecting and vintage shopping.

“It’s so awesome seeing entire families shop here. Parents get to show their kids nostalgic items from their childhood and I love that.”

Nagel said she hopes to keep this kind of shopping experience alive for as long as she can, and that customers keep supporting local small businesses in her store.
