Officials with Google Fiber recently said they are making progress in developing a network of high-speed, fiber-optic internet service, which features download speeds of up to 2 gigabits.

The background

John-Michael Cortez, Google Fiber’s government and community affairs manager, said in mid-December that Google Fiber service is now available in neighborhoods throughout the northeast, northwest and inner west sides of the San Antonio area.

Cortez said crews have installed high-speed, fiber-optic internet lines in the neighborhoods of Stone Oak, Encino Park, Monte Vista and Shearer Hills; neighborhoods surrounding Morgan’s Wonderland and St. Mary’s University; and in the city of Leon Valley.

What else?

Cortez said Google Fiber crews are building out the network in Windcrest and across nearby neighborhoods in unincorporated Bexar County. Cortez also said his company plans to spend this winter and spring further expanding their network in Shavano Park as well as into eastern and western portions of unincorporated Bexar County.
