One of Bexar County’s oldest community nonprofit organizations is set to celebrate a big milestone throughout the rest of 2026.
How we got here
The YMCA of Greater San Antonio is celebrating its 150th anniversary of serving communities in South Central Texas.
“We’re not just celebrating our history, we’re looking to our future in the community,” Louis Lopez, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater San Antonio, said at a Feb. 16 press event kicking off the celebration.
Next, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai presented the YMCA with a signed proclamation to recognize the milestone. He reflected on the time his late mother spent at the YMCA in San Antonio.
“The Y allowed my mom to have connections and socialize,” he said. “This moment is truly special as we unite as a community.”
District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears was also present and thanked the YMCA for their community efforts on behalf of the city of San Antonio.
“This is more than longevity, this is true legacy,” she said. “The YMCA has strengthened the fabric of our city.”

Throughout 2026, the YMCA will host events at various area branches to celebrate this milestone. Check out the anniversary webpage here to see a complete list of events.
The official 150th celebration will take place on Sept. 26 from 6 to 11 p.m. More details will be released closer to the event, but sponsorship opportunities are currently available, according to their website.
The context
The YMCA of Greater San Antonio was first established back in 1876, one of the city’s oldest social service organizations. Now, the nonprofit has 13 branches from Comfort in the Hill Country to the city’s South Side.
Over 3.3 million people have been served by the YMCA since its inception, and approximately 392,064 pounds of food are donated annually through local YMCA food drives, according to statistics on their website.
