San Antonio nonprofit awards $1.4M in grants to local charities

WellMed Charitable Foundation on April 3 announced $1.4 million in grants to organizations serving older adults in Texas and Florida.

San Antonio’s Family Violence and Prevention Services received a $20,000 grant to help meet the needs of older adult women seeking refuge from domestic violence at the Battered Women and Children’s Shelter.

A news release said the BWCS has seen an increase in the number of women needing shelter since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Family Violence and Prevention Services provides crucial services to older adult women who need a safe place to escape dangerous relationships,” WCF Executive Director Carol Zernial said in the release.

The release said WellMed employees assembled 300 Easter baskets for women and children staying at the shelter, providing them with items such as hair products, basic toiletries, snacks and toys—the result of a supply drive conducted among WellMed workers.

The WCF said it also awarded $20,000 each to local nonprofits Project MEND and the San Antonio Clubhouse, $25,000 to the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind, and $15,000 to the San Antonio Hope Center.
