New Braunfels will soon begin improvements at the last public exit of the Comal River to make it safer and more accessible for river users.

The details

The project was identified through the 2023 bond process and will receive funding from the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation.

Scott McClelland, assistant director of transportation and capital improvements, presented the project to the New Braunfels City Council during an Oct. 14 meeting, following a previous presentation to the EDC.

The city plans to replace the uneven stairs, improve access and add an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant route, McClelland said.

The project will also discontinue the use of a New Braunfels Utilities waterline running under the stairs, McClelland said.

The breakdown

The council awarded a $1.1 million contract to Austin Filter, plus a 10% construction contingency.

The project funding, McClelland said, includes the following allocations:
  • $162,000 for design funded by the EDC
  • $1.2 million for construction funded by the EDC
  • $250,000 budgeted from the fiscal year 2024-25 budget
What’s next?

The project is scheduled to begin in November and slated to be complete by March, McClelland said.

The city has coordinated with river outfitters to inform the public about the closure and reopening of the last public exit during the 120-day construction period.
