The Comal River has been named a National Water Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior, according to a June 4 news release from the city of New Braunfels.

The Comal River Water Trail is one of only four new recreation trails to receive the national designation, according to the release.

The other new trails on the list include:The National Trails System now includes over 1,300 recreation trails across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, adding 33.5 miles to the trails system, according to the release.

“We’re proud of our natural resources and this designation recognizes the important role the Comal River plays as an aquatic habitat while also providing a variety of recreation opportunities for our residents and visitors,” said New Braunfels City Manager Robert Camareno, in the news release.


What’s next

The Comal River Water Trail will be awarded a certificate of designation, trail markers, and a letter of recognition, according to the release.

Additionally, a recognition ceremony will be held in the coming months.
