Comal ISD and New Braunfels ISD campuses and departments will be closed Jan. 26 due to freezing temperatures and potential hazardous ice conditions.
What's happening
The majority of South Central Texas has been under an ice storm warning and winter storm warning, according to the National Weather Service. Areas within the winter storm warning are expected to receive 1/10 to 1/4 inch of ice accumulation, and areas within the ice storm warning are expected to see 1/4 inch of ice accumulation, according to NWS.
Hard freezes are forecast for Sunday and Monday night, with the Hill Country and some portions of the Austin Metrocom forecast to remain freezing through midday Tuesday, according to the NWS website.
An extreme cold warning has been issued by NWS for Comal and Guadalupe Counties until noon Jan. 26.
A special statement from NWS is also discouraging travel across the Hill Country eastward into the Austin Metrocom. Freezing rain and sleet from the night of Jan. 24 into the morning of Jan. 25 has left most roads icy and dangerous to travel on, according to the special statement. The icy roads are likely to continue through the afternoon of Jan. 25 and into the morning of Jan. 26.

CISD officials said they will monitor weather conditions throughout Monday to assess potential issues for Tuesday morning. Families are being encouraged to monitor the district's social media, local news and radio stations for any possible updates.
NBISD students and staff will need to plan to return to school Jan. 27, however, the district will continue to monitor the weather conditions and have discussions with local officials regarding the morning of Jan. 27. If there is a change for the school day, parents and staff will be notified before 5 p.m. on Jan. 26 through ParentSquare, social media and www.nbisd.org, according to the announcement.
