What’s happening
The Weighted Plate officially closed Nov. 22 at 5441 FM 1102, owner Cody Teer told Community Impact.
“We had a good thing going,” Teer said. “The community has been super supportive with helping us right now.”
Teer cited the early November installation of “no parking” signs along FM 1102 and directly in front of the business as the main driver behind the shutdown.
“The signs are only right in front of us on the road,” he said. "It feels like to fix a problem, they just put us out of business."
Teer said the venue closed not because of “practice or product,” but because of the reduced ability for customers to access the venue. Revenue dropped by as much as 40% to 60% after the signs were installed, he said.
Some context
New parking signs along FM 1102 were installed by the Texas Department of Transportation, not the county, since the roadway is owned and maintained by the state.
Comal County officials said they installed similar “no parking” signs along Country Ridge Drive, a county road adjacent to Blackbird Brims—the business next door to The Weighted Plate.
“The decision was made with safety in mind, in response to what neighbors were experiencing,” said Comal County Public Information Officer Cary Zayas in an email to Community Impact.
Zayas also said the county received complaints from neighbors about the business.
“They had a surge of cars parking in the area, and residents started reporting problems to us,” Zayas said in the email.
TxDOT also got similar feedback that "parked cars were creating unsafe sight-distance issues and blocking the right of way," Zayas said.
The background
The Weighted Plate first opened in 2022 and relocated to FM 1102 in the fall of 2024, according to previous reporting from Community Impact.
The bar, grill and live music venue offered cocktails, concerts, bar food, coffee and more.
