Iron Horse Bar & Grill serves juicy, specialty burgers in New Braunfels

The Iron Horse Bar & Grill has been a staple in New Braunfels for decades, Owner Brian Smith said.

When he took ownership of the restaurant in 2021, he wanted to keep the restaurant’s original vision while also giving it a refresh.

“It’s a place where people go to and know what to expect,” Smith said. “But we wanted to refine some of its attributes."


The local impact

Smith said he used to own a few corporate restaurants in Central Texas, but left them behind to pursue a more personal and meaningful venture at the Iron Horse.

“There’s a little more freedom and individualism, but there’s also a lot more responsibility,” Smith said.

Comal County looks to prioritize law enforcement in proposed FY2025-26 budget

Comal County Commissioners are considering adopting a $181 million budget for the upcoming 2025-26 Fiscal Year.

The overview

A no-new-revenue tax rate of $0.305015 per $100 valuation was recommended to commissioners to fund the proposed budget, which is about a 4-cent increase from the county’s current no-new-revenue tax rate of $0.264 per $100 valuation.


The proposed budget will raise more property taxes than last year's budget by $17.69 million, or 19.2%. Of that amount, $4.43 million is tax revenue to be raised from new property added to the tax role this year, according to county documents.

New Braunfels Utilities appoints new chief financial officer

New Braunfels Utilities, or NBU, has appointed Jessica Williams to serve as its new chief financial officer, according to a news release.


Williams succeeds Dawn Schriewer, who is retiring. Schriewer served as the utility’s CFO for 20 years, the release states.

Some details

Williams previously served as the CFO for Denton, Wichita Falls and the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System. She also has leadership experience in municipal finance, budgeting and strategic planning, according to the release.

K-Cafe now open in Live Oak

A Korean-inspired cafe and eatery has opened in Northeast San Antonio.

What’s special about it

K-Cafe opened Aug. 12 at 8320 Pat Booker Road in Live Oak. Owner Myong Bellitt said she wants to showcase her native hospitality and homemade recipes to the area.

What’s on the menu

There’s a wide selection of milk teas like rooibos and chai tea, plus a selection of traditional iced and hot coffee. For food, Bellitt said she makes all kinds of traditional Korean offerings, from kimbap dishes to beef bulgogi.
