The city of Schertz acquired grant funds that will help city staff move forward with two park and trail development initiatives, according to a Feb. 9 news release.
The financial support totals $1.73 million and will be used for the Hilltop Park project and the West Dietz Creek Trail project.

For the Hilltop Park project, the Schertz Parks and Recreation Department secured $750,000 from a Texas Parks & Wildlife local park grant.
This grant requires a $750,000 value match from the city, which will be provided through a combined effort from area homeowners associations valued at $493,000, labor from the South Texas Off Road Mountain-Bikers valued at $15,000, and $241,100 from the parks and recreation budget, according to the release.
Plans for the Hilltop Park project include accessible concrete trails, an overlook area, a new playground, trails and other amenities. Additional information on Schertz park development projects can be found here.

The parks and recreation department also secured $980,000 in funds from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization for the West Dietz Creek Trail project. This grant requires a $245,000 match from the city, which will come from dedicated trail development funds in the parks and recreation budget, according to the release.
The project includes the construction of a 1.76-mile-long, 10-foot-wide concrete trail beginning south of Wiederstein Road, crossing Savannah Drive and Maske Road, and ending at Schertz Parkway where it can connect with the Campus Exercise Trail behind the Hal Baldwin Municipal Complex, according to the city website.
“Hike and bike trails have been the No. 1 parks and recreation service that residents have selected in the Citizen Satisfaction Survey since 2016, so we are pleased to be making headway in getting trails on the ground for our residents,” said Lauren Shrum, director of parks, recreation and community services, in the release.
