While P&Z members recommended denial, the item will go before Boerne City Council where a final decision on the project will be made. City Council has the option of denying the application or accepting the permit regardless of the P&Z discussion.
The overview
For the development of a Goodwill in the Live Oak Shopping Center, a Special Use Permit must be approved by the city council.
This is not the first time the nonprofit has tried to open a Boerne location, being denied for a Special Use Permit in 2023 for a planned location off Bandera Road.
On June 17, a Boerne Neighborhood Discusssion was held to give the community additional information and input for the proposed location. During this meeting, community representatives raised concerns about the dilution of donations for local nonprofits that operate in a similar fashion.
Commissioners July 7 denied the SUP due to concerns from the community, the size of the facility, the potential for problems shown at other Goodwill locations and other issues with the development.
What’s next?
Boerne City Council will consider the SUP at a future meeting, making the final decision on moving forward with the project.
If accepted, the project will move forward as presented, and if denied, the project will not be developed within the city.
