Northside Community Park is funded through 2022 bonds, which covered city park improvements alongside road reconstruction projects.
Alongside bond funding, the Parks and Recreation Department in January received $750,000 in grant funding from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
What’s happening?
The park, located at the corner of Toepperwein Road and Adler Road, currently features a skate park and an open field that is home to a few soccer goals.
Parks and Recreation Director Lissette Jimenez said the new park will be constructed over two possible phases. The first construction phase will focus on amenities including:
- Two multi-use fields
- A splashpad
- An all abilities playground
- 12 pickleball courts
- A dog park
- A walking trail
- Restrooms
- A space for a small food truck park
Jimenez said during construction, the park will be closed to the public. Bond funds will only cover the first phase of construction, and grants or other funding opportunities will be utilized to fund the second phase, when city staff is ready to pursue that project.
Given a nearly year-long construction timeline, the new park could be open by the end of 2026.
The second phase is planned to include:
- An additional multi-use field
- Two practice fields
- A skate park expansion
- A crossfit station
- A community building
- A pump track
Why it matters
Boerne parks are utilized by surrounding cities and organizations, which can cause increased strain on the space available for fields. The creation of a new park will help alleviate some of the tension at Boerne City Park and Northrup Park, which are often crowded during sporting events, Jimenez said.
“We don’t have enough for the demand that we are receiving,” she said. “And that is a great thing because it means that kids are active and adults also want to play.”
Through resources such as the community survey, residents voiced a desire for more open spaces in the city.
Other projects
Alongside the creation of a new park, the bond also has funding reserved for the reconstruction of Adler Road, which includes a shared use path and sidewalk.
Communications Director Chris Shadrock said one of the city goals is to align the park project with the road project to ensure the two projects can be completed within the same time frame.
While the timelines for each project will not perfectly align, Shadrock said upon full completion, the area should be more appealing for residents and city visitors.
