San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture completes River Walk Public Art Garden

The San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture on Oct. 11 announced the completion of its multiyear project, the River Walk Public Art Garden.

Located near the intersection of Market and Alamo streets, the garden was realized after five years of planning, development and fabrication, city officials said.

According to a news release, the garden showcases nine installations by 12 San Antonio-based and international artists, including free-standing sculptures, wall-mounted art and a plaza.

Arts and Culture Executive Director Krystal Jones said the River Walk Public Art Garden symbolizes connection and creative expression by artists local to San Antonio and international artists who support helping to make San Antonio a global public art destination.

“We are thrilled to create a path for the public to enjoy these treasures. The diverse thoughtful intention behind each artwork is what brings this garden together,” Jones said in a statement.

City officials describe the art garden as a tribute to the importance and power of art, self-expression, human connectivity and social justice. City representatives also said the garden connects with larger-scale versions of their counterpart public art projects found throughout San Antonio public parks.

“When we curate experiences like the public art garden, travelers from the world over are captivated further by the beauty, history and culture of our city,” said Marc Anderson, Visit San Antonio president and CEO, in a statement.
