The Round Rock Fire Department will receive a new vehicle to replace one in the existing battalion fleet next year, city staff said in May.

City officials approved a purchase order in the amount of $217,389.90 for a new fire battalion truck in a May 15 meeting. This will be the third vehicle of its kind in the city's fleet, replacing the existing Battalion 2 truck, city staff said.
The details
General Services Department Director Corey Amidon said the new truck will feature a front brush guard, side steps and a custom aluminum Stonewell box in the rear. This box stores supplies and equipment for fire department staff and has a service life of about 20 years and can be used on multiple vehicles, he said.
Amidon said this vehicle will remain at the fire station full-time outside of specific training events and will not go home with the fire chief.
Why now?
By purchasing the vehicle now, Amidon said the city is getting ahead of long lead times in vehicle procurement and production of the Stonewell box.
The vehicle will be shipped to a facility where it will be custom-fit with the box, he said, a process that can take up to a year.
