The city of Round Rock lost a community icon this week.
Former Parks and Recreation Director Sharon Prete died Sept. 11 at her home with friends and family at her side. Prete, 70, led the city's Parks and Recreation Department beginning in 1980 through her retirement in 2005.
"Sharon was one of those unique and lucky individuals who had a job doing what she loved," Round Rock Mayor Alan McGraw said. "There will be people who enjoy the fruits of her labor for generations to come. Her legacy is her work."
In July 2012, the City dedicated its downtown Main Street Plaza to Prete as an appreciation for her efforts in enhancing the city's parks and activity programs. During her tenure Prete oversaw the construction of the Clay Madsen Recreation Center, the Micki Krebsbach Pool, the McConico Building and the Allen R. Baca Center, said McGraw at the dedication ceremony. McGraw also credited Prete with initiating noted annual Round Rock events such as Family Christmas Night, the Outlaw Trail 100 cycling tour, the Easter Egg Hunts, and the Daddy Daughter Dance.
