Hutto ISD rescinds program cuts

The Hutto ISD board of trustees on Sept. 11 approved rolling back plans to eliminate programs and institute new fees in lieu of the recently passed tax ratification election (TRE).

The board approved eliminating a planned $100 co-curricular and extracurricular fee, reinstituting transportation for students enrolled in the Legacy Program, restoring two elementary music teacher positions, restoring two elementary art teacher positions, reinstating district employee athletic event passes, and canceled plans to consider implementing student transportation fees.

"I see this as a good faith motion to the community for passing the TRE," HISD board of trustees President Doug Gaul said. "These [six] things make a major impact into the community."

Ed Ramos, HISD assistant superintendent of finance and operations, said the combined cost of the moves will add $219,000 to the district's expenses.

Hutto residents voted Sept. 1 to pass a 13 cent HISD tax increase intended to avoid further cuts and restore programs and staff. According to HISD, the new tax rate will translate to a $130 annual increase in taxes to the average Hutto homeowner. The district estimates the increase will bring in an additional $3.2 million in annual revenue.

HISD will consider restoring other programs and staff at its Oct. 4 meeting, including two elementary counselor positions, hall monitors and two custodians.
