The city of Richardson closed city facilities and canceled trash pickup Feb. 1 in response to severe winter weather affecting the North Texas area.
An initial winter storm warning was issued throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area starting Jan. 30, according to the National Weather service. The forecast, now an ice storm warning, is projected to last through Feb. 2. Widespread icing on bridges and overpasses took place on the morning of Jan. 31.
Due to that, Richardson closed 11 city facilities on Feb. 1: the Richardson Animal Shelter, the Charles W. Eisemann Center, the Gymnastics Center, the Heights Recreation Center, the Huffhines Recreation Center, the Huffhines Tennis Center, the Ray Noah Municipal Court, the Richardson Public Library, the Richardson Innovation Quarter Headquarters, the Richardson Senior Center and the Sherrill Park Golf Course. Decisions on service and operational impacts for Feb. 2 will be made later Feb. 1.
Due to continued hazardous conditions on area roads and alleys, makeup collection of trash, recycling or brush and bulky item collection will not be possible on Feb. 1. All commercial collections are also canceled. According to city officials, trash collections are delayed when conditions are such that vehicles cannot safely travel down alleys and personnel would be at risk of injury during the collection process. A decision about Feb. 2 collection will be made later Feb. 1.
