Richardson dog park closures planned for repairs

The Richardson city dog park, Bush Central Barkway, will close for several days in May and June to repair and improve the park’s lawn.

The park’s first of three scheduled closures was May 4-5. The second is scheduled for May 11-12 with the final closing taking place from May 19-June 18. Work will include aerifying, fertilizing and establishing new grass throughout the park, according to an announcement from the Richardson Parks and Recreation Department. Inclement weather could disrupt scheduled work and possibly affect closure dates.

Richardson Deputy City Manager Don Magner said the harsh winter storms contributed to the park’s need for repairs.

“We’re having challenges keeping it in a condition [where] the dogs can safely utilize it and residents can utilize it,” he said.

Magner said the park is popular with Richardson residents, and the closures will allow the turf time to repair throughout the summer.

“We’re giving it a couple of breaks—we’re going to hydro seed, [and] we’re going to give it a chance to rest and try to get some growth going on it,” he said.

The six-acre park opened in 2015 and is available between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. daily except Wednesdays when it opens at 10 a.m. The park is located underneath the highway at 3581 N.
