Richardson Public Library to close in October ahead of move to renovated building

Richardson Public Library will close on Oct. 11 ahead of its move back to the newly renovated library building.

The closure will allow time for staff to move library materials, equipment and services from the temporary location back to the renovated library. The renovated library is expected to open later this fall, according to a news release from the city.

What you need to know

Digital library resources will remain available after the temporary facility closes, but most in-person programs and services will be paused until the renovated building opens:

• Sept. 11: Interlibrary Loan requests will stop being accepted

• Oct. 2: Items currently checked out through the Interlibrary Loan program must be returned

• Oct. 5: Last day to submit a 3-D Print Job

• Oct. 11: Last day to check out materials and pick up items on hold

• Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.: The library and book drop will close

Per the city’s release, due dates for any materials checked out prior to the closure will be extended until the library reopens.

Monthly book clubs and the Halloween Spookilicious Program will continue as scheduled at City Hall.

Some context

The temporary library facility has been open since 2023, when renovations began on the original library facility. The renovation project is part of the city’s 2021 bond and includes changes to modernize the library facility.

“Moving back into the renovated Richardson Public Library is an exciting milestone for our community and an important step toward completing a project that will serve residents for generations to come,” City Manager Don Magner said in the release.

According to city plans, the renovated library will include more natural light, a large event space, a children’s area and a larger teen space.
