Seven Richardson City Council races—including one for the mayor’s seat—will be on the ballot as the city prepares for its next round of municipal elections in May.
Mayor Paul Voelker filed to run again Jan. 13. So far, no other candidates have submitted applications to challenge his seat. Voelker has served on council since 2013 and has been mayor since 2015.
City Council members in Richardson serve two-year terms and are up for election during May of odd years, according to the city’s website. Council members are limited to six two-year terms or 12 consecutive years of service.
Two current members are approaching their term limits. Mark Solomon, who is a former mayor pro tem and the current Place 2 council member, will term out in May. Steve Mitchell, who represents Place 6 and has served on council for 16 years, announced earlier this month that he plans to run for the Richardson ISD board of trustees. Mitchell is also a former mayor of Richardson.
