Six candidates file to run for Richardson City Council in May

At the close of Day 1 of the filing period, six potential candidates had submitted applications to run for Richardson City Council in May.

Incumbent council members Bob Dubey and Ken Hutchenrider filed to run for re-election for places 1 and 5, respectively. Incumbent Mayor Paul Voelker also submitted an application. Dubey was elected in 2017, while Hutchenrider was elected in 2019. Voelker has served on council since 2013 and has been mayor since 2015.

Three newcomers—Daniel Burdette, Marilyn Frederick and Arefin Shamsul—have filed to run for Place 6, currently held by Council Member Steve Mitchell. In his application, Burdette lists his occupation as software development manager. Frederick is in real estate sales, and Shamsul is in civil engineering consulting, according to their applications.

Mitchell, who has served on council for 16 years, is terming out in May. He announced last week that he plans to run for the Richardson ISD board of trustees.

Although he has yet to file, longtime Richardson resident Joe Corcoran said he plans to run for Place 4. The seat is currently held by Council Member Kyle Kepner, who has also yet to file.

City Council members in Richardson serve two-year terms and are up for election during May of odd years, according to the city’s website. Council members are limited to six terms or 12 consecutive years.

Candidates have until Feb. 12 to file applications to run for City Council. Early voting is scheduled for April 19-27. Election day is May 1.
