The University of Texas at Dallas introduced a new master’s program that combines sustainability and policy.
The sustainability planning and policy master’s degree program started this fall at the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences, according to a news release from the university.
The big picture
The new master’s program aims to provide graduates with the technical and practical skills to turn sustainability science into “actionable policy,” per the release.
Graduates of the program can apply the degree to a wide range of career paths, including city governments, federal agencies or private sector companies, said Muhammad Tauhidur Rahman, associate professor of geospatial information sciences and sustainability who led the development of the program.
The interdisciplinary program was designed by professors in both sustainability and policy fields and can complement any undergraduate background or degree, Rahman said in the release.
A closer look
The program starts off with sustainability basics, including courses covering technical geospatial information sciences, remote sensing and natural disaster hazards management, before moving into political economy and public policy courses.
“We’re equipping students with the analytical tools, geospatial insights and governance strategies needed to tackle pressing challenges like climate resilience, environmental crises and rapid urban growth,” said Dohyeong Kim, the senior associate dean of graduate education at EPPS, in the release. “It’s not just about understanding the issues—it’s about empowering leaders to engineer practical, equitable solutions for our communities.”
Specific roles for graduates of the program could include environmental policy analysts, environmental economists, sustainability specialists and urban and regional planners, according to the program website.
