Richardson ISD calls Sept. 3 emergency meeting to discuss potential campus closures

Richardson ISD has called an emergency meeting to discuss possible school closures as well as plans to move forward amid a reported outbreak of COVID-19.

The meeting will be held at the district’s administration building at 8:15 a.m. Sept. 3.

A statement of emergency released Sept. 2 by Superintendent Jeannie Stone said that the board of trustees will receive “critical information” that will allow them to determine what steps need to be taken to “mitigate the increased imminent threat to public health and safety.”

“The surges in positive cases of COVID-19 infections in RISD schools has resulted in an unforeseen closure of one RISD school and the quarantine of entire classes in other schools, in addition to other quarantines across the district that could result in the need to close other campuses,” the statement said. "As the numbers of positive cases continue to rise, time is of the essence."

A Sept. 2 statement published on Brentfield Elementary School’s website stated that the campus will close for 10 calendar days beginning Sept. 3 due to an elevated number of positive cases and quarantines among students and staff. Curriculum will be delivered virtually during that period, according to the statement.

As of Sept. 1, almost a quarter of Brentfield students were absent from in-person school, per the statement.

According to the district’s COVID-19 dashboard, there were 32 active cases among employees and 315 among students as of Sept. 2.
