With temperatures starting to rise, the city of Richardson is advising homeowners to de-winterize their own sprinkler systems.
According to city officials, the best time to check sprinkler systems is in late March. Residents are advised to conduct their checks before bermudagrass starts to green, usually when the low temperature is 60 degrees or higher for several nights in a row.
The Parks and Recreation Department will be sending out their own crews soon to de-winterize the city‘s sprinkler systems at all 39 parks. City officials said it will take three weeks to check all the sprinklers and have them available for the summer.
City officials said there are key things to look out for in order to conserve water and keep water costs down. These include:
- Make sure sprinkler heads are operating properly and positioned to not over-spray sidewalks, driveways and streets
- Adjust sprinkler heads so that they spray large droplets of water instead of a fog or fine mist, which evaporates quickly and may drift away with the wind
- Check for any leaks
